Thanks to the advancement in technology, consumers can easily harness solar power from the comforts of their own homes. In Dubai, through the Shams Dubai Initiative, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made solar energy available for residents in the city in support of Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to make Dubai the smartest city in the world.

“Shams” is Arabic for “sun”, a project launched in March 2015 to encourage residents to utilize solar energy in or to find alternative energy resources and to produce clean solar energy through Dewa’s grid. The initiative supports Dubai Plan 2021 for a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

What are the advantages of solar power?

Solar power is power derived from the conversion of energy from the sun. This energy becomes usable electricity. Most solar panels are made of photovoltaic cells that help convert this power to electricity.

Here are advantages:
  1. Solar power is both sustainable and renewable form energy.
  2. Its ability to generate electricity can heat water and greatly reduce energy expenditure in villas and buildings because the skylight panels can add light to rooms in these structures during the day.
  3. It requires very little maintenance. After the panels have been installed, it can generate electricity right away.
  4. They do not require mechanical parts that can fail.
  5. They are silent producers of energy.
How to avail of solar energy in Dubai through Dewa

Installing the solar energy programme by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is easy.
For building and villa owners, just follow these simple steps to avail of renewable and sustainable energy for your home.
  1. Contact professionals who can install the solar power systems. Consultants or contractors will assess the building or villa and will provide advice on the best solutions.
Consultants or contractor will then submit necessary requirements in order to acquire approvals from Dewa

Requirements to install solar energy through Dewa:
  1. No Objection Certificate for the solar energy system installment and for connecting it to the power network.
  2. Approvals for the design to be installed in your building or villa that meets all the requirements.
  3. The consultants or contractors can then proceed to onsite work.
  4.  After the work is finished, a notification to Dewa should be submitted for technical inspection and meter installation to complete the process.
  5. Upon completion of all these initial steps, your solar panels will be ready to use. Electricity produced from this will be used within the premise, while the surplus is exported to Dewa’s grid. To compute for your account, offset between exported and imported electricity units will be done for a customer to settle the account with Dewa based on the offset.
